Mark Garratt was appointed as the Village’s Chief of Police in 2011. Chief Garratt attended Akron University and is a 1992 graduate of the Hiram Police Academy and a 2005 graduate of Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC).
He began his career in law enforcement at Hiram Police Department in 1992 as a patrol officer. In 1993, he accepted a position with the Village of Oakwood Police Department (OVPD) in the patrol division.
As a patrol officer he was part of the first motorcycle unit in the Village and was appointed to the Detective Bureau in 1996. Garratt was promoted to sergeant in 2002 where he was also the first K-9 handler for the Village. With his partner Koda, he was able to apprehend criminals and deter drug trafficking. Garratt also spent six years with the SEALE S.W.A.T. team.
As the Chief of Police, Garratt is dedicated to improving the effectiveness of the department within the community and with other agencies working with the Oakwood Village Police Department. He believes cooperation and teamwork will enable the departments’ skills and abilities to achieve community goals to keep the Village of Oakwood a safe and desirable neighborhood.
